He thinks one of his most important jobs is explaining things to his patients.

"I think the most important thing is communication. I try to talk to patients without a lot of medical jargon, and explain from the very beginning, these are the options, these are the things you can choose to do."

He says effectively explaining things to patients can be the difference between a successful outcome and failed outcome, no matter what he does in the operating room. If patients don't understand their role post-surgery, all of his work will have been for nothing.
