Quacks on the attack!
At the annual Mead Gardens Great Duck Derby, Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic sponsored two rubber ducks to race against a crowded field of beautifully decorated and fierce competitors.
Our ducks Eugene and Jewett were not intimidated by the fleet of rubber ducks, and in the head, our duck, Jewett won by a tail feather! Even though he crossed the finish line backwards, he was still first, which is all that matters.
The event, which is held each year to benefit the beautiful gardens at Winter Park's Mead Gardens. Families and businesses come together for a series of rubber duck raises and a full day of free family activities.
The Duck Derby is the signature event held by the Friends of Mead Botanical Garden, an organization formed to support the revitalization of the garden, in partnership with the City of Winter Park.
Money raised at the Duck Derby support an environmental education program in Mead Botanical Garden, which has been in existence since the 1970s.
The program was initially funded by Orange County Public Schools and gave more than 5,000 students a year the chance to explore, study and experience the variety of habitats and biodiversity
" wetland, upland, pine forest and numerous water bodies. But the funding was cut.
Mead Gardens says now more than ever, kids need to get out and experience nature, which is why events like the Duck Derby are so crucial to the education of the community.
